happy guy fawkes day! [Nov. 5th, 2010|07:59 pm]
Neddal is growing a moustache. Moustache only. No beard! Or so he claims. I have not seen any photographic evidence yet.

But it's for a good cause so check it out!

He also sent me a link to an article with some very hilarious advice for life on the road.

He sent another link, to a less funny but still interesting Laughing Hyaenas tour diary from way back when.

OK OK OK, hello again! [Oct. 17th, 2010|02:30 pm]
Neddal was in Italy then Detroit then here then Philly then NYC. I got a text from him from the Bowery Ballroom which said, in its entirety, "Holy fuck. Swans." I asked him if it was a 'life changing' show and he said 'no' but has since proceeded to mention Swans every time I've talked to him since then, ahahah.

ANYWAY. The Does ARE still alive and are STILL geographically challenged but Neddal is going to be here again early 2011 and we hope to play a show!!! So please let us know if you have any suggestions of bands to play with or places to play!

And Liisa is hard at work on her book:
We are all very psyched for her and proud of her!!!

And lastly, since I am looking forward to seeing Grinderman in November, I will leave y'all with a candid conversation via text message that we had about the new Grinderman album!

- C.

Neddal: Listening to grinderman 2. Kinda surprised, is good so far. A bit too much wah maybe.

Me: I ttlly dig trk 1. Wish rest of cd was like that. Will be curious to see show.

Me: P.s. Too much wah? Is it an emergency situation or jst a minor thng? Heh

Neddal: 2nd song sounds like something fm bubblegum w/ lame lyrics. Not emergency yet.

Neddal: Is now a wah emergency. And a lyrical is way too indulgent. Arrangements need to be tighter and needs more dynamics.

Neddal: Actually sounds a bit like black mountain w. cave singing. Guess that.s why bm were on that bad seeds tour.

Me: Ya its not the strongest-- does have moments though. Am thnkin it'd be good live though.

Me: Aha. Did u want to post these txts 2 LJ as a review by text msg? Heh

Neddal: Hah. If you want. Edit out bits abt (edited) tho. And live...cld be good or cld be really dull depending on how psychedelic feeling and how much they let the wah + blue box cntrl them.

Sunday June 13 [Jun. 7th, 2010|12:16 pm]
This is a sad message to write, but I wanted to let y'all know about a gig that Nice Cat will be playing-- a memorial show for Sam "I Am" Hatzopoulos. He recently passed away:

Most people know that Sam was a big part of the Nice Cat experience-- from the time he got up onstage with us in his Evil Knievel leather jumpsuit to the time he surprised us by showing up to our West Virginian Y2K gig with Karma to Burn. He was always there (often rolling up in the Fury with the windows rolled down and blasting tunes) with his camera and a big smile and his Kyuss hat. He encouraged and supported and promoted Nice Cat right from the get-go, and it's probably safe to say that he believed in us before we even believed in ourselves. It would be impossible to meet anyone who loved music as much as Sam, and we were proud to get his ultimate stamp of approval from time to time, "Hey, that was HEAVY!"

It seems only fitting that there be a rock'n'roll memorial for Sam I Am.

Sunday June 13
Hard Luck Bar
812 Dundas street West (at Palmerston)
Toronto ON
Monster Voodoo Machine, Cleanse Your Demons, Nice Cat (& more?)
show proceeds going to a charity of Sam's family's choice

Please forward this or re-post it anywhere. And whether you knew Sam well, or not, please join us as we share our memories and rock out. Sam always loved loud music and good parties, and we hope to have as many friends with us as possible on this night.

OK.... [May. 6th, 2010|04:09 pm]
the_does it's been months and months and I never seem to get around to updating this! But I'm more of a tweeter these days anyway because it's so easy and I can do it from my phone and I'm pretty sure Facebook is evil so I'm still resisting it as long as there's people out there who will still communicate with me personally so I don't have to go on it!

Neddal's coming to town and we'll probably make a day trip to Detroit and maybe check out the Richard Kern exhibit in TO and spend some time discussing Jack White's guitar tone and/or talking about some aluminum guitar that Neddal really reeeeeally wants. I'll probably have some new Nice Cat mixes by then so we'll spend some time listening to those. Unfortunately he gets into town right when True Blood season two becomes available on DVD so I might have to ignore him (and everyone else outside of Bon Temps) for a couple of days.

But what we really want to do is ROCK!

Anyone, any show offers? A bill we can jump on, a house party we can play? Sometime between May 30 and June 4? It's a long shot but we'll consider anything! So leave us a comment here. And don't forget to talk to me on Twitter!

Things You Don't Want to Hear Your Bandmates Say! [Nov. 21st, 2009|10:49 am]
So we're still collecting Things You Don't Want to Hear Your Bandmates Say.
Thanks to Roy, Dale, Jonah, Bob, Daniel, Danny, Jay, Timothy and Ritche for contributing so far!

- C.

Right before a show: "Is that your drummer I just saw the cops leading away in handcuffs?"

"THIS is how it's done."
(As if there's only one way to do things. Not talking so much about the technical aspects of music-making here but more of the business end of band stuff. I also greatly enjoy when people who have never sold any appreciable amount of albums tell me: "I've STUDIED this stuff, I know what we HAVE to do." (to sell records) ...yeah, sure.)

"Sorry, I can't jam tonight.. My dog is sick."
(When really it was either an overlapped schedule with a hot date or an overlapped jam schedule with another punk band that you whored yourself out to, and it also got more of an attendance than your original band.)

"Ugh... No, It ain't verse, chorus, verse, chorus. It's verse, chorus, verse, bridge, then chorus."

Another one: "Where's the singer?" "Gone to buy shoes..."

"Uh, I don't know what's going on but dude can you maybe take a look at this?" (Bandmate starts unzipping pants...)

"Wanna jam some Green Day???"

"I don't want to talk about anything. I just want to play."

"Why can't you remember what I just thought of?"

From the drummer... "Hey guys! I just wrote a new song!"

"How about tuning down another whole step ???" (after being tuned down a whole step in the first place)

"Tabs gone."

"When do I get paid?"

"I don't know how my finger got in there... but I like it!"

Things you don't want to hear..... [Nov. 17th, 2009|04:35 pm]
..... your bandmates say.

Got any good ones?

Neddal posted the question to his Facebook. It was just a random conversation we were having for no particular reason at all.

I'm not on Facebook so I'm posting the question here.

I'll try to get the replies to his Facebook posting somehow posted here.

From Liisa........ [Nov. 3rd, 2009|10:54 am]
Friends, family, colleagues, selected stalkers....

Next Sunday night, November 8, I want you to watch TV.

I'm going to be hosting a music doc show called City Sonic airing on Aux TV on Sunday nights in November.

City Sonic is a series of short films, each one featuring a Toronto musician revealing a place that impacted their creative lives. We started with a humble goal -- to create high quality documentaries made for mobile phone, web and TV that, together, would map where the city's contemporary music history happens. When I came on board as researcher, I wanted to document the legacy that's being laid right now, which I feel is as exciting and valuable as much those lauded scenes of decades past. I was stoked to find artists who had much to say about their history here, and have been gob-smacked by the brilliance of our filmmakers, who transformed these stories into mini-features and far superceded what we've come to know as music video reporting. I am very proud to have been involved not only as researcher but as interviewer and writer and blogger and now, the face of the series on TV.

You may have seen me on television many times before. You might not realize this is actually my first gig not as guest or panelist but as full-fledged host. I'm super excited -- which is why I am sending this long-winded mass email. (Apologies to those who haven't heard from me personally in a while.) And so even though you can go on-line and watch almost all 20 City Sonic films right now, I hope you will take some time to check out the series on TV.

The first episode is about Toronto's musical landmarks and will feature films with Danko Jones at Maple Leaf Gardens, Lioness at the Masonic Temple, Laura Barrett with Martin Tielli at the AGO, Sebastien Grainger at the El Mo, Jason Collett at Kensington Market and Geddy Lee at Massey Hall. With thanks to my friends at PlayDead Cult for dressing me, make-up artist Andrea Heldman for glamming me up, and many bands and colleagues for letting me probe them for stories.

City Sonic premieres Sunday November 8 at 11pm EST
on Aux TV, that newfangled all-music channel on Rogers channel 107.
More episodes will air Nov 15, 22 and 29.

If you want to read my City Sonic blog:
If you want to watch some films right now:
If you're my mom and want to see a nice picture of me almost smiling:

Thanks for reading. Let me know what you think of the films!

I started to write a journal entry and it went like this..... [Nov. 2nd, 2009|05:34 pm]
Neddal's out of town again but the Does have got the start of a new song down. It's a sad song. Liisa suggested the working title, "Fucking Roky Erickson is in town next week but I didn't know that when I booked my flight," and of course that was based on what Neddal was saying at the time. Not sure when Neddal is going to be back in town so we'll have to get back on the computer recording stuff train that we first started with.

ANYWAY. Obviously I wrote that before last week. So, on to the present day! ........

Sometimes Neddal sends me emails with links to various things.
Like this one, titled "This will hurt your eyes":

You know how every once in a while you see someone w/a bad tattoo and
you think, "Fuck, that's the worst thing I've ever seen..." Yeah?
No, ignore the LOL nonsense and be horrified:

And ALSO. Ten more sleeps til the Jesus Lizard show! Awesome. And then also, eleven more sleeps until Skinny Puppy!

And it looks like Nice Cat will get into the studio really for real some time in November. It will be totally great and I can't wait. Not sure what we'll do with the recording once we have it. Any suggestions?

But in the meantime, I think I was supposed to mention (but forgot until now, oops!) that you can download Nice Cat stuff from Amazon!
